The Primordial Profundity

Bythos is the primordial, unoriginated Godhead and supreme source of existence in Valentinian Gnostic theosophy. Personifying the unfathomable depth of divine being, he abides in eternal silence alongside his thought, generating the celestial Pleroma through successive emanations while remaining utterly incomprehensible to lesser cosmic entities.

In the Valentinian Gnostic system recorded by early heresiologists and the Nag Hammadi codices, Bythos (the Profundity) is the unbegotten First Father (Propator) existing before all aeonic realms. Coexisting in serene, primordial repose with his consort Ennoia (also called Charis or Sige, Silence), he deposited the divine seed of the Pleroma, initiating the emanation of Mind (Nous) and Truth (Aletheia).
