When commanded to prostrate to Adam, he refused out of haughty rationalism, claiming superiority as a creation of fire over clay. Banished as al-Rajīm (the accursed/stoned), he obtained divine respite to misguide humanity through covert suggestions (waswās) and deceitful embellishments.
