Jophiel

Archangel of Beauty and Wisdom

Jophiel is an archangel of beauty, wisdom, and illumination in Jewish mystical and Christian esoteric tradition, guardian of the Torah and patron of the arts. Absent from the canonical Bible yet venerated from pseudepigraphal lore to Anglican feast days, Jophiel taught seventy languages at creation, commands fifty-three legions in the Zohar, and stands as a companion of Metatron — one of the few archangels consistently depicted as female.

In Kabbalistic and earlier pseudepigraphal lore, Jophiel — Beauty of God, from Hebrew yophi joined to El — guards the Torah and illuminates the wise. The Life of Adam and Eve (as Dina) places the angel in the seventh heaven teaching seventy languages to newborn souls; the Zohar names Jophiel a Great Angel Chief commanding fifty-three legions, overseeing Sabbath Torah readings as companion of Metatron. Later folklore credits Jophiel with teaching Noah's sons Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Grimoire correspondences diverge sharply: Agrippa assigns Jophiel to Saturn, Paracelsus to Jupiter, and the Calendarium Naturale Magicum Perpetuum with Key of Solomon variants to the sephirah Binah — a seat more commonly held by Zaphkiel — while some angel-lists substitute Raziel for Jophiel altogether.

“Gaster's Hebrew Visions of Hell and Paradise (JRAS 1893) preserves related ascent lore; encyclopedia summaries document the Saturn/Jupiter/Binah three-way split across Agrippa, Paracelsus, and the grimoire Binah tradition.”
