Raziel

Keeper of Secrets

Raziel is the angel of mysteries and Keeper of Secrets in Jewish mysticism, holder and transmitter of the hidden knowledge of the universe. Inseparable from the grimoire that bears his name, the Sefer Raziel HaMalakh, Raziel stands close enough to the throne to overhear divine mysteries — recording them for Adam, recovered by Enoch before his transformation into Metatron — and presides over the sephirah Chokmah alongside Jophiel.

In Jewish mysticism, Raziel — Secret of God, also called Gallitsur — is the Keeper of Secrets who stood close enough to the throne to overhear divine mysteries and set them in writing. The legend most tied to the name holds that this record was given to Adam after the expulsion, so Adam and Eve might find their way back toward God; resentful angels seized the book and cast it into the sea until Enoch recovered it, studied it, and was transformed into Metatron. Raziel holds the sephirah Chokmah (Wisdom), a seat shared with Jophiel, while rank-lists variously call the angel a cherub, one of the Ophanim, or chief of the Er'elim. A related work, the Sefer HaRazim, claims in its preface that Raziel gave its secrets to Noah, whence they passed down to Solomon as a source of his wisdom — though the two books originated separately before HaRazim material was folded into the Raziel corpus. Scholars note the Mandaean Manda d-Hayyi as a structural parallel, instructing the first man in the mysteries of life.

“Ancient Origins surveys the Practical Kabbalah grimoire complex; encyclopedia entries document the Chokmah attribution, the Gallitsur alternate name, and the Adam-Enoch transmission legend with its Enoch-to-Metatron link.”
